For the year 2023, market dynamics for insurance-linked strategies (ILS) proved to be truly favorable: The increased catastrophe event activity of the last years, coupled with a negative performance in the broader financial market in 2022, triggered an increase in capital requirements for insurers and insurers, imposed by regulators and rating agencies. At the same time, the market experienced a reduced investor interest for ILS – this clash of increased demand and limited supply of capacity led to a significant uplift in premium levels for Cat Bonds and Collateralized Reinsurance Transactions (CRI). But was the ILS industry able to benefit from this development? After all, the insurance industry faced yet another series of catastrophe events in 2023, such as the earthquake in the border region of Turkey and Syria in February, a series of bad weather events in Southern Europe over the summer months, the wildfire outbreaks in Canada and Hawaii, and with hurricane ‘Idalia’ so far at least one major hurricane to affect US mainland.
